2007 SCHOLARSHIP
RECIPIENTS
PENNSYLVANIA LIVESTOCK ASSOCIATION PRESENTS SCHOLARSHIPS AT
THE KEYSTONE INTERNATIONAL LIVESTOCK EXPOSITION
The Pennsylvania Livestock
Association presented educational scholarships to four
outstanding young individuals at the Keystone Livestock
Exposition on October 4, 2007. PLA President Scott
Davenport made the presentations at the Opening Ceremony of
the 51st Anniversary of the show. Each of the
recipients filled out a detailed application, including
academic transcripts and personal references as well as a
narrative about their livestock involvement. They were
chosen on the basis of outstanding leadership skills, a keen
interest in the livestock industry and an involvement in
KILE and support of PLA among other traits. Receiving
scholarships were Emma Bard. Amanda Miller, Lacey Murray,
and Katie Nolt. |

Emma Bard, the daughter of
Keith and Mary Ellen Bard of Sidman, PA in Cambria County is
a student at Pennsylvania Highlands Community College in
Johnstown, PA. An honors graduate of Forest Hills High
School, Emma is pursuing a two year degree in Early
Childhood/Elementary Education with plans to transfer to a
four year degree program. In school, she was active in
sports including cross country, basketball and track and
field. An active 4-H member, Emma has shown market swine
locally as well as at KILE and the PA Farm Show where she
had the middleweight champion crossbred in 2006. She also
shows market lambs which are raised on her family’s farm.
She says, “being involved in a 4-H livestock project takes
you deeper into the realm of raising animals”. As a member
of South Ebensburg UCC Church, she has been a teacher and
active in the Bell Choir. Emma plans to continue her
interest in livestock as she works with her family to
improve their breeding animals. Professionally, she wants
to work with children and hopefully inspire them to be 4-H
members so they can have the wonderful experiences that she
had in the program. |

PA in Berks County is the daughter of Ronald and Joan
Miller. She is a student at Millersville University
pursuing a degree in communication with public relations
option with plans to pursue a career as an event coordinator
at an exposition complex which hosts agricultural events. A
national honors graduate of Tulpehocken High School, she was
a member of the softball team, FFA and active in community
service projects. Amanda grew up in the 4-H program, but
her showing career began at an earlier age when as she says,
“the sheep were as big as me and getting the ribbons was the
best part of showing”. She has shown sheep at the local,
state and national level, (including KILE and Farm Show)
where she listened and learned from other breeders. An
active member of St. Johns UCC Church, Amanda is involved in
community service through her church. A former Lamb and
