2008 SCHOLARSHIP
RECIPIENTS
PENNSYLVANIA LIVESTOCK ASSOCIATION PRESENTS SCHOLARSHIPS AT
THE KEYSTONE INTERNATIONAL LIVESTOCK EXPOSITION
The
Pennsylvania Livestock Association will present educational
scholarships to four outstanding young individuals at the
Keystone Livestock Exposition on October 2, 2008. PLA
President Tammy Weaver will make the presentations at the
Opening Ceremony of the 52nd Anniversary of the
show. Each of the recipients filled out a detailed
application, including academic transcripts and personal
references as well as a narrative about their livestock
involvement. They were chosen on the basis of outstanding
leadership skills, a keen interest in the livestock industry
and an involvement in KILE and support of PLA among other
traits. Receiving scholarships will be Katelynn Curtis,
Tiffany Dean, Katrina Frey, and Mallory Ketterer.. |

Katelynn Curtis is the daughter of Carl and Christine Curtis
of Landisburg in Perry County. A distinguished honors
graduate of West Perry High School, Katelynn is a student at
Penn State Harrisburg in the pre-medicine program. During
high school, she was awarded student of the month twice, was
a member of the National Honor Society and Civics Leadership
Team. An active participant in both 4-H and FFA, Katelynn
has shown market lambs, steers and beef breeding at local,
state, and national levels including KILE. As a member of
New Hope United Church of Christ, she has assisted with
vacation bible school, shut-in visitor and involved in the
Youth Group. Addition volunteer work was with the
Salvation Army, hospital and nursing home volunteer, and
clean up at several community projects. |

Katelyn
has been a leader in 4-H and FFA, having held several
offices and serving in a leadership capacity on committees.
Crediting her experience with animals in helping her to
choose her career path to becoming a
obstetrician/gynecologist, Katelynn says, “as exhibitors we
learn the responsibility of caring for someone other than
ourselves”. |

Tiffany
Dean is a daughter of Gary and Joan Dean of Strasburg, PA in
Lancaster County. A graduate of Lampeter-Strasburg High
School, she was a member of marching banc, played lacrosse
and was on the agriculture burrow scholar honor roll.
Currently, a student at Penn State, Tiffany is pursing a
degree in Animal Science with a business option. While
maintaining dean’s list status at Penn State, she has been
involved in Block and Bridle, Little I, Dairy Science Club,
Collegiate Farm Bureau and Ag Student Council. An active
member of Lancaster County 4-H, Tiffany served in many
offices and in committee leadership roles. She was a member
of the PA 4-H Livestock Judging Team and a PA delegate to
National 4-H Congress in 2004. Her livestock projects
included market lambs, market swine, steers and beef heifers
which she exhibited on local, state and national levels
including the KILE show. |

Tiffany
hopes to pursue a career in agriculture sales/marketing in
any region of the country and says, “Agriculture has the
same name no matter where you travel, but it exhibits
different faces in different regions of the country." |

Katrina Frey is the daughter of Fred “Fritz” and Nancy Frey
of Quarryville, PA in Lancaster County. An honors graduate
of Solanco High School, she was a member of National Honor
Society, Yearbook Club, and band. She is currently a
student at West Virginia University enrolled in the
Pre-Pharmacy Program and plans a career as a pharmacist
following graduation. Her involvement in agriculture began
at an early age working with her parents and grandparents to
care for the family’s livestock. As a member of 4-H and FFA,
Katrina has shown steers, Angus heifers, breeding sheep and
market lambs on a local, state and national level, including
the KILE show. She has held numerous offices in both 4-H
and FFA, and been involved in service projects with both
organizations. |

In 2007, Katrina was a member of the PA 4-H Livestock Judging
team placing second and also placed second at the Big E FFA
Judging Contest. Outside of school and 4-H, Katrina is a
member of Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren where she
continues her community service projects. A member of the
PA and National Junior Angus Association, she has held
several offices and again worked on community service
projects. Of her competition, she says, “If there is one
lesson I have learned from competition, it is no matter how
well you place it is how you got there that matters most.” |

Mallory
Ketterer is the daughter of Brian and JoAnn Ketterer of
Bernville, PA in Berks County. A graduate of Tulpehocken
Area High School, she was active in sports playing
basketball and running track as well as an involvement in
Student Council. Currently enrolled at Albright College in
the Art Education program, she plans to teach art at the
secondary level upon graduation. |

An
active member of Epler’s United Church of Christ, she is a
youth mentor and nursery assistant and worked on the
fundraiser committee for a new playground.Other volunteer
activities include Easter Seals, youth basketball leader,
and the Reading Soup Kitchen. When she was eight, Mallory
was enchanted by the sheep at the local fair and begged her
parents for a lamb. That began her involvement in 4-H, the
start of her Border Leicester flock and her current reign as
the PA Wool Queen. She has served in various leadership
capacities in her 4-H clubs, received numerous awards and
was the Outstanding 4-Her at the 2008 Reading Fair. Mallory
credits 4-H for the opportunities it provided for her that,
“has allowed me to teach others, and provide the same
opportunities I was given”. |
